An option outside of mainstream

Our Roots and Future

Live to Learn Education has always been praised for its ethos, expertise, quality of teaching and nurturing nature. We are proud to share our timeline:

2016: Live to Learn Tutoring was established and functioned as one-to-one, in-home sessions only

2020: The Live to Learn Hub was launched, specifically for home educating families and those outside of mainstream education (ages 11 years+)

2021: Live to Learn acquired an orchard and forest to offer outdoor education; Wonder Years, based in Woodbury, Devon

2022: Live to Learn Tutoring was renamed as Live to Learn Education, as our offerings were more vast than just tuition

2024: Live to Learn Education opened it’s private, local examination centre, catering for IGCSEs/GCSEs/AS-Levels/A-Levels and Functional Skills

2025: Purely Primary, our full and half-day provision for children aged 11 and under was launched 

2026: Live to Learn Education branched out and formed a new organisation called, ‘Live to Learn Integrated Assessments’, this has enabled us to be able to offer a large number of assessments that will help parents, young people, schools and the LA have a full picture of a young person’s needs, and support with ensuring those needs are then met within the education pathway they have chosen.

Kelly Taylor

  • Director and SEND Lead
QTS, PGCE, B.Sc (Hons.), Dip.HE, MTA Hey, I’m Kelly and I am the founder and director at Live to Learn! I established this venture and passion of mine in 2016, in order to provide a source of academic and emotional support for children who aren’t reaching their true potential.  From being a one-to-one/small group tutor, you can really gain a true representation of a child, which enables you to fully personalise their learning journey in more of a holistic way; giving students the time, care and attention that they are often no longer able to access in busy school environments.  I absolutely love Live to Learn; everything we do, everything we stand for and the amazing 5* reputation that we have built. The team are amazing, the children are amazing, and I enjoy every day that I wake up knowing that myself and my team will be making a real life difference to children’s lives.  In my (not so) spare time I run around after my gorgeous neurodiverse daughter, Larni, as well as pushing myself to new levels in kite surfing.

Ned Taylor

  • Director and Outdoor Educator
Hi, I’m Ned and I am the outdoor actvities instructor and mentor at Live to Learn! I’m passionate about working with young people in the outdoors, to support their wellbeing, social skills and confidence. I have been teaching waters sports and outdoor activities for over 20 years, and never get tired of the introducing people to new experiences. My biggest achievement was that in 2010 I was British Kitesurfing Champion, and still love to kitesurf locally in my spare time; as well as spending time with my family.

Lindsey Tucker

B.Ed.(Hons.), PGCE, DTLLS, ADTLLS(Lit.), Cert.TESOL Hello, I’m Lindsey and I love Literacy! I have worked with all ages and abilities, from pre-school to pensioner, and taught a wide range of subjects, but English is my specialism and my passion. The ethos behind Live to Learn Tutoring is one I totally endorse: learning is a life-long process and should be one to savour and enjoy. As a qualified teacher, counsellor and complementary therapist I believe in holistic wellbeing and particularly enjoy working with students who have failed to flourish in a traditional school setting. I have recently obtained my qualification as a PATOSS Access Arrangements Assessor and use this to support the students at Live to Learn with their examination access arrangements.

Zac Winterbourne

  • Science Lead Tutor
BEd, QTS Hello, I’m Zac I’m a science tutor with Live to Learn. I have a degree in Education Studies which led me to getting my qualification as a science teacher, specialising in physics, four years ago. I strongly believe in an interactive approach to science, from growing crystals to making electromagnets to analysing cells. Being a tutor allows me to work with students at their own pace and develop their love for science and build their confidence in a nurturing environment. I moved to Devon in 2019 with my wife and enjoy walking on the moors and taking photographs of the landscapes. When it’s raining, you can find me at home writing stories!
Cheryl

Cheryl Cooper

  • Hub Manager and English Lead
Manager and Secondary English and Humanities Tutor BA Hons History, History MA, PGCE, QTS Hi I’m Cheryl and offer tuition in English, History, Psychology and Religious Studies. I also manage the day-to-day running of our Exmouth Hub and make sure everyone is happy and that we have enough chocolate biscuits. I have a Masters Degree in History and have published works focusing on the material evidence of Life and Religion in Early Modern England. This work prompted me to focus on different ways of learning and teaching in looking at material evidence, which in turn inspired me to look at how I could apply this in a classroom. Teaching has always been something I’ve enjoyed – I started my career as an educator teaching people how to Scuba Dive all over the world before coming back to England and training as a History teacher. I love to be around people and take pleasure in helping people achieve their goals – especially the tough ones. As a tutor at Live to Learn I fully support holistic, child centered learning. I believe in meeting students where they are and helping them develop at their own pace. I believe in supporting students to gain confidence and resilience to carry through into life as well as supporting them academically. In my spare time you will find me walking on the beach with my dog, Rona (who makes a regular appearance at Live to Learn) or I’ll be sea swimming somewhere in Devon. You’ll basically find me near the water!

Graham Mullin

  • Maths Lead
I have always enjoyed maths, I studied maths up to A level and then I went to Bristol University to study more of it! I really enjoy helping students progress in maths, I am a patient and supportive person, and I work with the students to ensure they get their best results. I have three teenage children of my own and I help each of them whenever I can. When I am not working, I like to keep fit by cycling (road and mountain bike) and running, I also spend lots of time gardening.

Jessica Shellard

BA (hons degree), PGCE, MA. I am a committed and experienced teacher of secondary art with a proven track record of delivering best practice to all year groups; having been head of art at two well-respected independent schools in Devon, where I taught up to and including A’ level. I am passionate about my subject and inspiring students, aiming to create a nurturing and creative environment. I see ‘art activity’ as essential to the well-being and self-esteem of both the individual and society. Viewing the subject as inclusive, rather than exclusive and I believe that all have the ability to learn through Art. I remain a practicing artist exhibiting across the UK where I work with drawing, film and sound to create artworks that explore the idea of the female.

Jane Shields

Hello! I’m Jane Shields, mum of 2 wildlings and a former Primary School teacher specialising in Physical Education and Forest School. My passion for the outdoors and fostering experiential learning led me to the role of outdoor education assistant. With a focus on holistic development, I immerse students in nature, guiding them through physical activities and the exploration of the natural world. My journey into outdoor education has been fueled by a love for movement and the environment. Whether teaching teamwork through outdoor games or nurturing an appreciation for nature’s marvels, I’m dedicated to creating engaging and enriching experiences for every student. In my own time you’ll find me supporting people in their health and fitness journeys as a fitness and mindset coach, as well as training for my next Hyrox event. I’m excited to bring the joy of outdoor learning to students, fostering a deep connection with nature while promoting physical well-being and a sense of wonder.

I love learning. Whether it’s in the outdoors or on the water or even the classroom, I love learning and experiencing new things. I’ve taught from Key Stage 1 to post graduate in lots of subjects but originally trained as a secondary Geography and PSHE teacher. As well as more traditional teaching, I’m also an outdoor instructor and can often be found on the sea or estuary around Exmouth.

Hello, I’m Dom, and I’m the Primary Lead at Live to Learn! With over five years of experience in education, I specialise in primary teaching across a range of subjects. I’m passionate about creating a hands-on, engaging learning environment where children feel safe to explore, be curious, and develop new skills. I believe in a tailored approach, adapting activities to meet each child’s individual needs, whether we’re solving maths puzzles, conducting science experiments, or embracing creative projects. Having recently returned from two years of travel, I’m excited to bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the team. Outside of work, you’ll often find me enjoying adventures like hiking through Dartmoor or getting lost in my latest book obsession. I only moved to Devon this year, so I’m still exploring the local area and discovering all the beauty this part of the country has to offer!

Hi, my name is Gavin Staak. I love Physics, Chemistry and Maths and have taught in Botswana, Uzbekistan, Qatar and South Africa. I am passionate about seeing the dreams of young people come true, while providing glimpses of how all the stuff we need to know can be used in the real world of industry & business. I am married to Louise (who is an artist, musician and English Teacher) and have three children who live separately in Cape Town, Seoul (South Korea) & Manila (Philippines), all working as creatives and following their dreams in Art, English and Music. I am passionate about Formula 1, Marvel Movies and seeing people explore, achieving things that bring them joy and hope. My love for the Physics & Chem Labs comes from helping my dad who was a tanner and my father-in-law who was a one-man gold miner. Today I continue to ‘find the gold in people’ .

Hi, my name is Louise. I’m passionate about teaching English and unlocking the potential of every student so that they feel valued for who they are. It is immensely satisfying to watch learners gain confidence as they discover that they have unique views and skills to contribute to the world around them. I have taught in various countries—Botswana, South Africa, Qatar, and Uzbekistan—in roles ranging from English learning support, teacher and home educator to my own children. I have taught students from primary school to high school. I recently moved to the UK with my husband Gavin from South Africa. I’m enjoying all that lovely Exmouth offers. In my spare time I am an avid birdwatcher, reader, writer, musician, and artist.

I am particularly interested in supporting young people with SEND and enjoy teaching through practical activities and tasks so that pupils can be actively involved in their learning. I live at home with my two teenage children and four cats; there is never enough food in the fridge!

Hi I’m Jo, when you make an enquiry to Live to Learn this will come to me. I am very passionate about us as an alternative provision, I find it incredibly rewarding seeing the change in the young people from their first day with us, to the happy and confident people I see after a short time with us. When I am not busy organising everybody at the Hub, I am running around after my toddler Lyla and enjoying activities around East Devon. I also have Mabel my miniature sausage dog who sometimes comes to work with me and loves attention, so be sure to make a fuss of her when you see her!

Hello, I’m Vee, I have 3 amazing Children each with their own beautiful idiosyncrasies and they teach me new things every day! I work part time here at Live to learn and also am a reflexologist. I enjoy listening to people and learning about all different personalities. I’m a big fan of bringing calm and peaceful energy to things and enjoy seeing the beauty in life!
